One of the most cost-effective and time-saving facets of many health insurance plans is telemedicine. Because it is newer, many people do not know what telemedicine is and therefore don’t know how to use it.
Telemedicine refers to the practice of caring for patients remotely when the provider and patient are not physically close to each other. Modern technology enables doctors to consult patients by using HIPAA compliant video-conferencing tools. This video conversation sometimes eliminates the need for an in-person visit to the doctor or emergency room.
The benefits of telemedicine allows the patient to:
- Save time and money.
- See a board-certified physician.
- Confer with a doctor from the comfort of home through live, face-to-face video visits, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, using any device that has a front-facing camera, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer.
- Potentially avoid a visit to the emergency room, urgent care unit, or your primary healthcare provider.
Telemedicine visits are HIPAA compliant allowing you to meet safely and securely. The cost for a telemedicine visit is the same as an office visit to your Primary Care Provider. If you have a plan where the benefit is subject to the deductible, and you have not met your annual deductible, you can still save on out-of-pocket costs. Simply call your insurance carrier or log into your online health insurance account for cost information.
